personal style | my closet at a glance

in the little bit of spare time i've had these days, i've spent it watching the Olympics. never before have i been interested in ALL of the events. i swim like a rock, but i love me some Michael Phelps!

anyway, last Sunday while watching, something came over me and i jumped up and ran to my closet to start organizing. since i'm not psychic, i never know when my mild-to-moderate OCD will strike.

i just have to act on it when it does.

my closet wasn't in bad shape to begin with, but for some odd reason seven years ago when i moved into my house, i thought it was a good idea to mix summer stuff with winter stuff. it made sense at that time. i think.

since our seasons run together, it's not practical to pack things away. fall goes from 75 degrees one day to a scorching 99. hello summer. what happened to spring?!

i moved all of the summer stuff out and now i'm left with jackets, fall dresses, hoodies, and shrugs.

see that denim number next to the houndstooth blazer?! yeah...that one. it didn't get moved due to its length. it doesn't qualify to get permanently housed in the summer section. btw - it's one of my latest thrift steals so be sure to come back and get the scoop on it.

all of my sleeveless tops and summer dresses got shifted to this spot.

everything is in plain sight now instead of buried amongst the hodge-podge like it was before.

i do have a system when it comes to closet organization. some people group things according to color, but i like to hang things of similar style together. all of the sleeveless tops are next to each other, then short sleeves, then bell/longer sleeves, etc. within those sections, things then get sub-grouped according to color.

long shirts, my one romper, and strapless dresses are to the right of the tops.
followed by skirts and shorts.

belts are broken down into color. black. brown. and miscellaneous.

i'm sure i could find an official belt hanger gadget at The Container Store, but this way has worked for me my entire life. remember: i have mild-to-moderate OCD...not full-blown-ready-for-an-intervention kind.

i did expand my belts to three hangers though. they were stacked together on just two.

i purged and found some things to donate as well. all in all - i'm well pleased with the new space.

money-saving style tip: got stuff with price tags still on it? been meaning to wear something, but keep forgetting? move it to a place in your closet that you look at often. keep it front and center so you're reminded to pull it out and put it to use.
